We understand that you may have questions about ear wax removal, the treatments we offer and what to expect during your appointment. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions to help you feel informed and confident about choosing Ear to Ear Dorset. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
What is ear wax removal?
Ear wax is a natural substance that helps protect and clean your ears. However, sometimes too much wax can build up, causing symptoms such as reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness or discomfort. Ear wax removal is a procedure used to safely remove excess wax from the ear canal. At Ear to Ear Dorset, we offer microsuction and warm water irrigation, selecting the most appropriate method following an examination of your ears.
What is microsuction?
Microsuction is a method of ear wax removal that uses a specialist suction device to carefully remove excess wax from the ear canal. The procedure is carried out under direct vision, allowing the practitioner to see inside your ear throughout treatment. Microsuction does not involve flushing the ear with water and is generally a quick, well-tolerated procedure. You may hear some noise from the suction device, and occasionally experience mild discomfort. Your practitioner will explain the procedure and check that it is suitable for you before treatment begins.
What is ear irrigation?
Ear irrigation is a method of removing excess ear wax using a gentle, controlled flow of warm water to flush wax from the ear canal. The procedure is carried out using specialist equipment and may be recommended when the wax is suitable for removal this way. Ear irrigation is not appropriate for everyone, particularly people with certain ear conditions or a history of ear problems. Before treatment, we will examine your ears, ask about your medical history and explain whether irrigation is a suitable option for you.
Does ear wax removal hurt?
Ear wax removal is generally well tolerated, and many people experience little or no discomfort. However, you may notice some unusual sensations during treatment. Microsuction can be noisy, while warm water irrigation may cause a feeling of pressure or fullness. Occasionally, either procedure can cause discomfort or dizziness. We will explain what to expect before treatment and encourage you to tell us immediately if anything feels uncomfortable. Treatment can be paused or stopped at any time.
Do I need to use olive oil before my appointment?
Using olive oil ear drops before your appointment can help soften hardened ear wax, making removal easier and more comfortable. We recommend contacting us before your appointment so we can advise you on whether ear drops are suitable and how to use them. Do not use ear drops without medical advice if you have a perforated eardrum, ear discharge, suspected infection or have previously had ear surgery. If you experience pain or irritation, stop using the drops and seek advice.
What happens during my appointment?
At the beginning of your appointment, we’ll ask about your ear health, any symptoms you’ve been experiencing and your relevant medical history. We’ll then examine your ears using an otoscope to check for ear wax and assess whether removal is appropriate. If treatment is suitable, we’ll explain the procedure, discuss any relevant risks and obtain your consent before proceeding. Throughout your appointment, we’ll explain what we’re doing and make sure you’re comfortable. Afterwards, we’ll check your ears again where appropriate and provide advice on looking after your ear health. If we notice anything that requires further assessment, we’ll recommend contacting an appropriate healthcare professional.
